CD REVIEW: Rainbow by Elyza

Elyza is a solo female artist from the Charleston SC area who began her songwriting and singing career in 2013. Her songs, about love and relationships, have a flavoring which she feels is unique to her personality. Currently, her songs are being played in over 131 countries and in all US states, on RadioAirplay.com. Elyza released her first CD, Lovers Tango, in September of 2015. Rainbow, her newest CD, was released April 2017, can be found at CD Baby.com and Apple Itunes. While she continues to write, her dream is to become a name on someone’s record label. Her albums can also be found on YouTube under various artists.

Although Elyza is primarily a mellow – smooth jazz artist, she also has a great deal of R&B, soul, pop and even some island undertones that all crossover together for an organic sound all her own. She gets this by blending these genres in a seamless fashion. The opening track to this CD is entitled “Heart Breaker” and it blends these combos more than any other track on the disc. But the music is flexible enough to spot these other genres within each track, however the rest still have a straightforward approach to one of these genres or another. It was well placed as the lead off track for that reason.

“Praying For A Sign” sounds more like a gospel track but it’s not, the title just makes it look that way. Some of these tracks are big ballads, and this is one of them. The same can be said for “Why’d You Do Me That Way” which plays at around the same pace and that the two add-up even in their delivery. This shows a consistency that doesn’t let up throughout the CD. “Lovers Tango the Storm” is probably one of the more serious tracks, as it comes complete with rain sounds and could even be describes as blues. But that can also be said for a couple of other tracks, keeping the usual blues without being hardcore about it.

But one place to describe a weakness is where the title track “Rainbow” doesn’t resonate as much with me as some of the others, as it lost in the opportunity to do so by not standing out above and beyond the rest. And if I were to point out why it’s probably that it goes on a minute or so longer than it needs to and that can take the prize or do just the opposite for any song. It’s okay because “Putting My Best Foot Forward” puts the set of tracks back in-order for the rest of what is a good CD. It helps get the momentum back up for sure, and there are no other bumps to be found as it plays out nicely.

That leaves “What TheHeah” with its called for humorous touch to lighten the mood, which is does. This doesn’t stand out any higher than the rest, it just keeps the tempo moving consistently along. But it’s “This Fire” which moves me the most, and recommend the album all the-more. Everything seems to hit home on this track and seals the deal with me for Elyza with an excellent song before closing with the likes of “Where Did We Go Wrong” to end it all. This CD lacks somewhat in-the area of production but makes up for it with some strong material and great singing. Elyza’s next release awaits.
